BACKGROUND

The WA Sleep Health Study (WASHS) is a multidisciplinary, collaborative project that involves researchers in the Centre for Genetic Epidemiology and Biostatistics at the University of Western Australia working closely with sleep physicians and clinical researchers based at the Western Australian Sleep Disorders Research Institute (WASDRI).
The WASHS aims to establish a population-based clinical and epidemiological database resource and linked biospecimen resource (DNA plus sera) in order to investigate the causes, natural history and prognosis of patients with obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) in WA.
As part of WASHS, questionnaire data, sleep-associated data and blood samples are collected (after informed consent) from all newly diagnosed sleep apnoea patients for the purpose of investigating the clinical and genetic epidemiology of OSA in WA.
By collecting a large range of information about study participants, we hope to gain a comprehensive understanding of the factors involved in OSA to better manage, treat and prevent disease.

Data from all sleep studies performed in WA since 1988 (~34,000 studies) will be entered to create the WASHS database. A total of ~29,000 historical sleep studies will need to be transferred from paper to electronic media. We also plan to collect a total of 10,000 DNA and serum samples for the WASHS Biospecimen Bank. Past clinic patients (n=5,000) will be approached by mail to request donation of a specimen. An additional 5,000 consenting patients will have blood drawn during the course of this study (2006-2008). The stored DNA from consenting patients will enable future molecular genetic studies (funding to be sought separately).

OBJECTIVES

1. To collate and enter all of the extant sleep-associated data obtained in Western Australia since 1988 (including historical paper records) into a core database - The WA Sleep Health Study (WASHS) database.
2. To establish a WASHS biospecimen bank of DNA and sera from all consenting OSA patients in WA.
3. To investigate the aetiology, natural history and prognosis of patients with OSA in WA using the WASHS database.
4. To investigate the inter-relationship of OSA to other diseases, including cardiovascular disease, cerebrovascular disease, diabetes and obesity using the WASHS database and the core WA Data Linkage System.
5. To investigate the familial aggregation of OSA and associated conditions using the core WA Data Linkage System, specifically the Family Connections resource.

Collection procedures

Questionnaire: A 20-page Sleep Health questionnaire is completed by all participants at the time of their initial consultation at the WA Sleep Disorders Clinic (WASDRI). This extensive questionnaire includes information on participant demographics, sleep behaviours, medical history, family history of sleeping disorders, lifestyle factors (eg. smoking, alcohol, physical activity) and anthropometric measurements).
Blood: Blood samples for biochemical and DNA analysis are taken after informed consent is given by the patient. DNA is stored at the WA DNA Bank.
Polysomnography: Polysomnography data is collected from patients. Data collected includes EEG, ECG, oxygen saturation, number and type of arousals, sleep duration and efficiency.
Dual Energy X-Ray Absorptiometry (DEXA) data and anthropometric data has also been collected on a subset of patients.
Carotid Intima Media Thickness (CIMT) will be collected on a subset of patients from September 2009 onwards.
Depression questionnaire information will also be collected on all patients presenting to WASDRI from September 2009 onwards. A subset of these will have more detailed depression information collected through a detailed interview.
