Funding agency

  • Canadian Partnership Against Cancer

BACKGROUND

This study is part of the Canadian Partnership for Tomorrow Project and will contribute samples and data from up to 30,000 individuals aged between 35 and 69 from the four Atlantic Provinces - Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, New Brunswick and Newfoundland and Labrador.

OBJECTIVES

The Atlantic PATH is a long-term research project investigating environmental, lifestyle and genetic factors related to the development of cancer in Atlantic Canada.

Topics of interest

  • No Broad approach with no specific topic of interest
  • Yes Target specific topics of interest (health outcomes, health determinants, etc.) (Cancer, health outcome, environment and lifestyle.)

METHODS

Legend Yes No Unknown

General design

Study design Cohort
Type of participants Individuals
Target or final number of participants 30000
Target or final number of DNA 30000

Participant selection / Characteristics of the population

Selection criteria

Yes Age Minimun: 35 years    Maximun: 69 years
Yes Country of residence Canada (Province of Nova Scotia, Province of New Brunswick, Province of Prince Edward Island, Province of Newfoundland and Labrador)

Recruitment procedures

The Atlantic PATH is encouraging Atlantic Canadians aged 35 to 69 to volunteer for the study. In addition, in Nova Scotia, people randomly selected from the Medical Services Insurance (MSI) database are being directly invited to participate.
Recruitment began in the Halifax region in early 2009 and hundreds of people volunteered to take after stories about the study appeared in the media. Other public information strategies, including posters in key locations, are being used to encourage volunteers to come forward. Similar public information strategies will be employed as the project begins recruiting in the rest of Nova Scotia and other parts of Atlantic Canada. We are also recruiting through employers and community organizations.

At the same time, Medavie Blue Cross is mailing invitation packages to randomly selected people in the Halifax area on our behalf. When we move into other provinces, we will consult with the provincial department of health in New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island and Newfoundland and Labrador to determine the most effective additional recruitment method.

Participants attend an assessment centre where physical measures are taken - including blood pressure, height, weight, bioimpedance, grip strength and heel ultrasound. Bllood, uring saliva and toenail clippings are collected.
