Vitamin and mineral supplements are among the most commonly used drugs in the US. Many consumers use supplements to prevent chronic diseases such as cancer, but with few exceptions, there is sparse evidence for either their benefits or risks.
The aims of this cohort study are to investigate the associations of supplement use with cancer risk. Specific aims focus on the associations of vitamin C, E, calcium, multivitamins, folate, omega-3 fatty acids, fiber and other supplements with prostate, breast, lung, colorectal, melanoma and total cancer incidence and total mortality. Other exposures are diet, NSAIDs, BMI, and health history.

Supplementary informations
Participants lived in the 13-county areas in western Washington State covered by the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results program cancer registry.
Recruitment procedures
Using names purchased from a commercial mailing list, 364 418 baseline questionnaires have been mailed followed by a postcard reminder after 2 weeks.

Collection procedures
In 2000-2002, we recruited a cohort of 77, 721 men and women, with a high percentage of supplement users within western Washington State, via mass mailings. Cohort members completed a 24-page self-administered questionnaire at baseline on use of 38 supplements, diet, physical activity, weight history, medical history, and cancer risk facotrs. Three months after completing the baseline questionnaire, participants were asked to provide DNA samples (by use of self-collected buccal brushings); non-responders were asked again about one year later. 220 participants randomly selected from the cohort completed additional questionnaires and a home interview and provided blood, urine and toenail specimens for validation studies.
Follow up procedures
The cohort is followed-up for cancer incidence and death. Participants are followed by annual linkage to the western Washington SEER cancer registry and Washington State death data. We also link to the National Change of Address (NCOA) files annually to determine participants who have moved out of the SEER catchment area, and we continue to track participants who are "lost" to follow-up.

Study data and specimens may be available to outside investigators. Data are extensively edited and summary exposure variables computed on supplemental nutrient 10 year dose, dietary nutrients, physical activity ,etc. Study has excellent documentation. 5000 cancers have been ascertained thus far.
Buccal cell specimens only are stored. DNA is extracted when a sub- study is funded
