The National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES III) is a program of periodic surveys conducted by the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Examination surveys conducted since 1960 by NCHS have provided national estimates of the health and nutritional status of the U.S. civilian non-institutionalized population. To add to the large amount of information collected for the purpose of describing the health of the population, DNA samples have been collected in the second phase of NHANES III and in NHANES 1999-2002.
The NHANES are a series of cross-sectional surveys designed to provide national statistics on the health and nutritional status of the general household population through household interviews, standardized physical examinations, and the collection of biologic samples in special mobile examination centers.

| Supplementary informations | Repeated surveys - Each survey is cross sectional. In 1999 the survey became a continuous survey with data release every two years. Each two year survey is a cross sectional sample of the U.S. population. |
| Target or final number of participants | 15000 |
| In NHANES III DNA was collected on 7159 participants age 12 or more years. In NHANES 1999-2002 DNA was collected from 7969 consenting participants age 20 or more years. | |

Recruitment procedures
This is a complex random sample of the US population. Oversampling of race/ethnic minorities and some age groups drive the sampling, though every county in the US has a probability of selection. Once a county is selected, Census districts are randomly selected then block groups of homes. Listers go out to list all homes in the neighborhood and then households are randomly selected. These households receive a letter introducing the survey. An interviewer goes to the household and lists all persons living in the household obtaining age, gender and race/ ethnicity of each person. Then a sample person(s) is selected (on average 2 persons per household are selected but this varies by race/ethnicity).
