Generation Scotland: Genetic Health in the 21st Century (21CGH) aims to create a Scotland-wide approach to improving health by identifying the genetic (inherited) contribution to important diseases. Generation Scotland is a collaboration between the NHS and all the University Medical Schools in Scotland and has been funded by the Scottish Executive and the Scottish Higher Education Funding Council.
The principal objective of this study (GS:21CGH) is to establish the genetic profile of a control population of people living in Scotland in relation to health and disease. In this respect, the aim is to provide a resource of control DNA and genetic information to aid in the design of future studies, limiting the further need to obtain fresh control blood/DNA samples and to provide a knowledge base from which future genetic studies can be compared.

Recruitment procedures
There will be 3 methods for recruitment and the procedures will vary for each centre:
Method 1: general practitioners will be approached to seek their permission to take part in this study. With their permission, we will ask them to send a standard letter, along with the participant information leaflet (PIL), initially to a group of randomly selected adults from their practice, selected from the practice records (e.g. age/sex Registers).
Method 2: from a long-term population study. Individuals who have participated in a longitudinal study (APOSS) who have agreed to further contact will be sent the PIL.
Method 3: participants will be recruited from individuals who consent to being approached regarding the GS:Scottish Family Health Study or an Edinburgh Falls and Fractures study.
Additional participation in GS:21CGH will be voluntary and subject to additional consent.
