BACKGROUND

The role of diet and nutrition in the etiology of cancer was a long-standing interest of the principal investigators. Several years of epidemiologic research on diet, nutrition and cancer in Hawaii's ethnically diverse population, including studies of Asian migrants, had strengthened our conviction that this was an area of major research importance and that it could help explain the wide variations in cancer incidence among different ethnic and racial groups. By the early 1990's, the investigators concluded that further advances would benefit greatly from establishing a large prospective study.

OBJECTIVES

To explore the relationship of genes, diet and other lifestyle factors to cancer risk in an ethnically diverse population.

METHODS

Legend Yes No Unknown

General design

Study design Cohort
Type of participants Individuals
Target or final number of participants 215251

Selection criteria

Yes Age Minimun: 45 years    Maximun: 75 years
Yes Country of residence United States (Resident of Hawaii and California (Los Angeles County))
Yes Ethnic origin (Japanese, African American, Latino, Non-Hispanic Whites, Native Hawaiian)

Recruitment procedures

The main sampling frame was Drivers License files in Hawaii and Los Angeles county. This was supplemented with additional sources at both sites. A 26-page questionnaire that included an extensive quantitative diet history, as well as other demographic, medical, and lifestyle information, was mailed to prospective participants.

Data Sources

  Cross-sectional Repeated/continuous
Yes Questionnaires to participants/respondents Yes No
No Direct physical measures
Yes Biological samples Yes No
No Medical paper
No Electronic databases
No Genealogical records

Collection procedures

Participants completed a 26-page self administered baseline questionnaire between 1993 and 1996. Subsequently, blood and urine samples were collected from a subset of the participants. The bulk of the latter collection took place between 2001 and 2006.

Follow up procedures

Annual passive follow-up is accomplished by computer linkage of the cohort to the population-based cancer registries of Hawaii and California that are part of the US National Cancer Institute`s Surveillance, Epidemiology and End Results (SEER) Program, and to state death certificate files. Additional follow-up is accomplished by periodic linkage to the US National Death Index and by direct contact with the participants through further questionnaire mailings and annual newsletters. For example, during the period 1998-2003, a brief follow-up questionnaire to update selected dietary and non-dietary baseline information was administered; during the period 2003-2007, the baseline dietary questionnaire was re-administered.
