BACKGROUND

HUNT is one of the largest health studies ever performed, and is a unique database of personal and family medical histories, collected in three consecutive studies;

HUNT 1 was carried out in 1984-1986 to establish the health history of 75,000 persons;

HUNT 2 was carried out to study the evolution of the health history of 74,000 persons in 1995-1997, including blood sample collection from 65,000 persons organised in a biobank database containing genetic information.
The focus regarding BBMRI is on HUNT 2.

OBJECTIVES

The main objectives in HUNT 2 were the major public health issues as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, obstructive lung disease, osteoporosis and mental health, in concordance with current priorities of the health authorities.

Collection procedures

All residents of Nord-Trøndelag County, aged 20 years and older were invited to the health survey in the two-year period from August 1995 – June 1997. The initial invitation letter was sent by mail attached to a 3-page questionnaire and an information folder. A second questionnaire was filled out at the screening station. Additional questionnaires, more specifically aimed, were used in sub-samples. Clinical measurements such as blood pressure and heart rate, height and weight, waist and hip circumferences, in additional to more specific measurements on sub-groups of participants were performed at the screening station.

Follow up procedures

Those who confirmed to have diabetes were re-invited to another blood sampling in the fasting state. Fasting glucose, C-peptide and anti-GAD were measured on these. Non-fasting blood glucose readings (≥ 11.1 nmol/l) were followed-up. Individuals with extremely high blood pressures were recommended to visit their GP. About three weeks after the health examination each participant received a letter reporting some selected test results. Included were also some advise regarding healthy food, smoking and physical exercise. There was also a follow-up of other disease related sub-groups as haemochromatosis, COPD, phsyciatric disorders.
The whole cohort has been invited to participate in the HUNT 3 study (a 10 year follow –up) which is just completed.

COMMENT

HUNT 3 is currently ongoing, and will be completed in June 2008. 110 000 persons are invited to participate in the study. Data are collected by means of questionnaires, clinical examinations and collection of blood and urine samples.

The focus regarding BBMRI is on HUNT 2.

All the questionnaires from HUNT 2 are translated into English, they can be obtain on the study Web site.

Supplementary informations CONOR is both the name of a collection of health data and blood samples, and of the collaboration between the Norwegian Institute of Public Health and the Universities in Oslo, Bergen, Trondheim and Tromsø.
All surveys included in this collaboration used 50 common CONOR-questions agreed upon before the first CONOR survey in Tromsø in 1994.
