BACKGROUND

The MDC was started in the early 1990s as a screening survey in the middle-aged population of Malmö, the third largest city of Sweden. Subjects living in Malmö were invited for a clinical examination, food-frequency questionnaire and blood sampling (DNA mini-prep). In all 28,000 subjects participated (attendance rate 41%, 2/3 women) between 1992-1996. During a later follow-up, the MDC-Re-examination (MDC-RES) in all 1,200 of the original screenes attended in 2007-2008, when ne DNA (maxi-prep) was obtained for biobank storage.

OBJECTIVES

1. To screen for dietary habits and genetic markers in order to predict incident cancers in the general population;
2. To screen for cardiovascular risk factors and early atherosclerosis in a sub-sample.

COMMENT

The MDC is a very large cohort study with dietary data and DNA from baseline. We are currently re-examining the MDC-Cardiovascular arm subsample for evaluation of Early Vascular Ageing (EVA syndrome). The MDC is part of the European network collaboration EPIC with substudies on cancer risk and risk of type 2 diabetes.

Reporter comments

In the whole MDC cohort of 28,000 subjects only basic anthropometric measures were available, but also full questionnaire data and extracted DNA (mini-prep). However, in a random sub-sample, the MDC Cardiovascular Cohort (n= 6000) additional measures were carried out, including a full evaluation of cardiovascular risk factors (glucose, insulin, lipids) as well as measurement of IMT and plaques in the carotid artery. In addition, a seven-day dietary recording was carried out for all participants (n= 28,000) - for details check the name Elisabet Wirfalt on PubMed/Medline.
