BACKGROUND

The Cohort of Swedish Men (COSM) including about 50,000 men, born 1918-52 and living in Västmanland and Örebro Counties was established in 1997.

OBJECTIVES

To investigate the impact of gene-environment/life style factors (particularly nutritional factors) interactions on chronic diseases such as cancer, cardio-vascular diseases, osteoporosis, cataracts, obesity etc.

Recruitment procedures

All men aged 45-79 years living in two counties in central Sweden (Västmanland and Örebro) were invited to the study.

Collection procedures

During one week (Sept 1997) 100,000 questionnaires were sent by mail and answers were optically read (under a person's supervision to read unclear answers which computer could not interpret). Participants were asked to report their level of activity at work, anthropometry and nutrition habits.

Follow up procedures

After ten years (late 2007) a new questionnaire will be sent out.
