    OBJECTIVES

    To investigate whether daily supplementation with alpha-tocopherol, beta-carotene, or both would reduce the incidence of lung or other cancers among male smokers.

    Supplementary informations

    Follow-up:
    1) three annual visits,
    2) at 3 years, food frequency questionnaire,
    3) follow-up through Cancer Registry and governmental databases.
    Several blood samples from each participant.
    Participants have been followed since 1993 to evaluate the long-term effects of the vitamins on cancer incidence, and on overall and cause-specific mortality.
