Background

Since the early 90s collection, storage and preservation of biological specimens have been included in longitudinal, cross sectional and case-control epidemiological studies carried out by the National Center of Epidemiology, Surveillance and Health Promotion (CNESPS) of the Istituto Superiore di Sanità, the public health institute for Italy. Biological specimens include serum, plasma, buffy coat, packed red cells, urine, and saliva preserved at -30°C, -80°C or in liquid nitrogen, according to the specific study protocols. The strength of our bank is the linkage with their large collection of population based data on lifestyle (physical activity, diet and smoking), hematologic assay (lipids and glucose), exams (EKG, spirometry, bone densitometry), and with the follow-up of the population enrolled for all cause and specific mortality, hospitalization and evaluation of physical performance and cognitive function in old age, which guarantees information on a number of etiological questions.
